Lier, 2007

The historic building is characterized by a neo-Baroque façade which has been completely restored. In order to introduce the historic character of the building inside, all attention has been drawn to the ceiling. The ceiling in plaster work - which is treated as a contemporary take on classical decorative moldings- generate an undulating motion. In some places, there are shaft openings in the ceiling, to the second floor, creating a play of light and shadow, opening the shop to the outside world. The spatial connection of the ground floor with the first floor is central to the design. Fragile invests in Lier in the spatial structure and only then the decorative aspect is discussed. Architecture becomes an attempt to re-engage the urban context in the shopping experience.
